Shark bite on swimmer is latest in series of such attacks along Carolinas coast

(CNN)At least five reported shark attacks this month have swimmers proceeding with caution as they head to coastal beaches in North and South Carolina.


In the latest incident, a beach outing in North Carolina took a harrowing turn Saturday afternoon when a 17-year-old boy was attacked by a shark.

10-Year-Old Boy Bitten by Shark in Florida

Just days after two teenagers suffered vicious shark bites at North Carolina beaches, yet another shark attack was reported today -- this time in central Florida.


Around 1 p.m. today, a 10-year-old boy was swimming in shallow water in Daytona Beach Shores when he was bitten by what appeared to be a small shark, according to Capt. Tamra Marris of Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue.

The boy suffered minor lacerations to his calf. He was treated and released at the scene, Marris said.

May 30, 2015: Sharks struck beach goers twice in a single day in Florida.


One attack happened to a 19-year-old woman in waist-deep water in New Smyrna when a shark bit her foot, according to Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue. ABC affiliate WFTV reported that the injury was minor and that the woman was treated on site.

Two teenagers were mauled in separate shark attacks on the same stretch of North Carolina beach Sunday, both suffering life-threatening injuries, local officials said.



A 13-year-old girl lost a part of her arm when she was bitten by a shark in an attack that occurred around 4:40 p.m. in Oak Island, a town about 30 miles south of Wilmington, according to Brunswick County officials.
